This small ax, which was accidentally found in a barn, cracked a factory plastic handle. Since the specimen was even very unusual, it was decided to restore the hatchet and make a new one for it - a more durable, convenient and reliable handle.

As a material for the pen, we will use an exotic species of wood that blends perfectly with metal - wenge. It should be noted that this type of wood is quite difficult to machine, but the final result is worth a little sweat.

Ax restoration: milestones

First of all, remove the old factory handle from plastic and cut a small piece with thread from the tail of the hatchet. After that, we mark the surface of the wooden bar, randomly draw the contours and cut the blank for the handle.

We saw it in half and make a small depression in the central part under the shaft of the hatchet. We insert the tail of the ax into one half of the workpiece, fill everything with epoxy diluted with the hardener, and press it with the second half.

After the epoxy is completely dried, we process the wooden handle with an electric file or on a grinding machine, and then also manually. It is also necessary to process the metal surface of the hatchet itself. Cover the handle with mineral oil.

Summing up the restoration

After simple restoration work, the small hatchet, which had been gathering dust in the barn for a long time, began to look much better than in the factory version. Other old tools can be restored in the same way. See the video for the basic steps for making an ax handle.
