Straight brace from an old file

Before you dissolve the logs on the board, you must first remove the bark. To do this, you can use an ax or a shovel, however, the best carpentry tool with two handles is best for this purpose - a brace (or plow). You can make it with your own hands from a flat old file.

It should be noted that the brace is of two types: curved and straight. In this review, we will examine in detail how to make a two-handed tool with a straight knife. If you use a rusty file to make a brace, it is advisable to remove all rust using a grinder with a flap wheel or an electric drill with a brush for metal.

The main stages of work

First of all, using a grinder with a cutting disc, you need to cut the second shank in the file body so that you can then plant two wooden handles. Then, using the same grinder, it will be necessary to make the cutting edge of the blade along the entire length of the working part of the file (approximately to the middle of the canvas - in width).

The final sharpening of the scraper blade is best done with a diamond backing (however, you can also use ordinary sandpaper). At the next stage, the tool is quenched, followed by cooling in an oil medium.

Please note - to make it easier to process the file, you must first remove the internal voltage of the metal. This is achieved by annealing: in a furnace or a hearth, it is necessary to heat the workpiece to a temperature of 750-770 degrees, and then let it slowly cool in the same furnace.

Then, on a lathe, we make wooden handles of the desired shape (or you can simply remove them from the old tool). The result is a homemade bracket for peeling logs.
